Waterwheel
Vrtača

by Milenko D. Ćirović Ljutički

A wide-ranging collection from an accomplished Serbian poet. A denseness and intensity is evident, whether the subject is landscape, mother, or war. The author doesn't shy away from metaphor, often used to considerable effect.

Birds are pecking up
remnants of summer night
between the bushes
Ćukaju tice
ostatke ljetne noći
izmedju žbunja
a deer cautiously
drinks up moonlight
from the river.
Jelen oprezno
ispija mjesečina
iz rijeke.
out of a cup of tea
the smell of summer comes
and my mother's smile
Iz šolje čaja
podire miris ljeta
i majčin osmjeh
Sad river banks
over destroyed bridge
joined by the memories.
Tužne obale
premošćene sjećanjem
na srušeni most.
